Any recent visitors to Porthcawl Seafront would have noticed an unexpected new feature. A dragon made from driftwood.
People have been left uncertain where this dragon has come from. Some people were asking if it has been put there on purpose and by who. Many visitors have been going online and discussing on social media where is has come from and sharing their thoughts.
The large piece of driftwood washed up at Porthcawl a couple of weeks ago. Occasionally moving slightly on a hightide. Some locals were already taking to social media to comment and document its movements. Several people already noted on the odd-looking piece of wood and compared it to that of a dragon or to ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness Monster.
It has been established now that unknown locals have positioned the piece of wood and decorated it. They have added eyes and green spines to the fire breathing dragon. It has also been given the nickname ‘Lizzie’ on social media.
The recent sunshine has bought more visitors to Porthcawl and with families and children were enjoying the new addition. Groups of people were stopping to take pictures and children enjoying climbing and exploring the driftwood dragon.
Natalie Bayliss, 20, works in Porthcawl and is a regular visitor to the seafront. She expressed her surprise: ‘When I first saw it, I thought, what is this? But now, I love it!’ She shared. ‘I hope it stays. It’s nice to see something different.’
Residents and visitors alike shared the same sentiment as Natalie. Lots of people were sharing their joy and creating humorous edits on different Facebook groups.
However, some were concerned that some of the materials may end of becoming litter. Sharing concerns on Facebook that if the weather turns bad the materials may end up in the sea. Then if people keeping adding to the decoration a cycle could continue.
For now, the Porthcawl driftwood dragon remains along the seafront. Adding a new feature for locals and family to enjoy while we have this warmer weather.
